"With Esperanza I wanted to make a solar and optimistic piece, which pulls upwards, which encourages people to stand up, to fight, to see things in a positive way. I see it as a little ember that can make a fire almost go out again. In the intro you can hear the steps of the dancers from the Ballet National de Marseille walking in rhythm and giving an almost military rhythm to the piece, I like the combative energy it gives it. With the crisis we're going through at the moment we hear more than ever that the world will not be the same as it was before. I think so too, and I sincerely hope it will be for a better world. Esperanza is my tribute to the army of saviours, those who are fighting for a better world." Rone
Official Video for Squarepusher's ‘Detroit People Mover’ directed by Jacob Hurwitz-Goodman.
There had long been an intention to shoot a video for this piece on the Detroit People Mover itself. As production got under way, it was apparent that the typically empty train has a peculiar resonance with the desolation settling on urban areas across the world. Director Jacob Hurwitz-Goodman explores our new-found isolation on a driver-less journey through the city, contrasting it with human contact in images from Detroit’s history produced by an correspondingly autonomous printer.
This bleak urban portrait serves as a drastic contrast to Squarepusher’s last visual representation for ‘Terminal Slam’, which with its bustling street scenes was shot just three months before, including at the busiest crossing in the world in Shibuya. These varied aesthetics not only reflect the sudden change of conditions but two very different sound worlds that co-exist within this project.
“I like the way both of these videos articulate salient points about our urban environments - in ‘Terminal Slam’ about the prevalence of advertising and possibilities for its subversion, and here regarding our zombie cities that despite the lack of everyday human contact continue marching on. The track itself is part of a series begun in 1993 inspired by the music of Detroit.” – Squarepusher
‘Detroit People Mover’ features on Squarepusher’s new album ‘Be Up A Hello’, and new EP ‘Lamental’, both available now.

Absolute fire. Pythius releases his 'Upheaval' EP. Upheaval is what it is... Pythius delivers alluring drums met with perpetual bass. Punchy kick with plenty of energy to get you moving! BellaBassFly
The
success of the ‘Descend’ LP from Pythius on Blackout has ricocheted
over the years since it was released in 2017, seeing him play stages
worldwide as well as continue its eminence through a host of
collaborations and compilation offerings. However now he returns with
another standalone selection, through his forthcoming ‘Upheaval’ EP
which will once again realign you with the Pythius sound. Returning to
his home on Blackout Music, the forthcoming EP switches between four
tracks of undiluted dancefloor destruction, the type of music which
Pythius has built his career from.
Beginning
with the sci-fi influenced throes of UKF supported ‘Kepler’ alongside
Blackout bosses Black Sun Empire, then progressing the theme and ending
with the sonic chaos of ‘Dathomir’, the ‘Upheaval’ EP remains within the
same sonic soundscape throughout. The metal inspired drums of
‘Auxiliary’ add to the track’s madness and it pays attention to previous
sequences within Pythius’ catalogue. Meanwhile, contributions like
‘Watch Me’ with French drum & bass stalwart Redpill provides the
EP’s next collaborative effort, welcoming yet more like minded producers
into the fray.
NYC's original bad gyal is throwing down 40 minutes of dnb megamix heat! Viper Recordings presents BASSRUSH 4.0 Megamix. It's time to put those dance kicks on and throw some elbows. Empress never eludes her listeners. Empress is about the business of beat. Any morning with new music from Emoress is a great morning. Get it! BellaBassFly
Viper have always been a label proud to push the drum & bass sound across the globe, while Bassrush have long been at the forefront of pushing that same sound on their home turf.
With 30 tracks from the genre’s finest, the album celebrates the diversity of drum & bass music. Tracks from Viper staples Futurebound, Giganti, Dossa & Locuzzed, and Trei sit alongside some of America’s hottest acts like Flite, DJ Empress, Sub Killaz, Replicant , Dr Apollo and more.
8 of the tracks are previously unheard, including the atmospheric collaboration between Dutch duo NCT and label boss himself Futurebound, an elegant yet catchy and emotive tune that is set to be a favourite. Madface returns to Viper with a loud, adrenaline filled dancefloor destroyer, while DJ Phantasy’s ode to Bassrush is a wonky jump-up number with a whole lot of funk. Prolix also contributes to the album with a cinematic neuro tune with a gritty, hard-hitting drop, while American pioneers Dr. Apollo and Richter team up for the rock-infused ‘Can’t Stop’ featuring the vocals of Bzrkr. The album also features a new record from Halflight with ‘Lean’, a foreboding tune with a grimey groove that really stands out. Sub Killaz and Replicant team up for another taste of US DnB with ‘Told You So’, an ominous, techy tune with a sinister twist.
Following the success of samplers part one and two, the full album is out now via Viper Recordings & Bassrush and covers the full spectrum of DnB with everything from liquid to neuro and dancefloor, a mix of high-adrenaline weapons, groove-inducing beats, and soulful elegance that only Viper and Bassrush can bring to the table.

It was only a matter of time… Chomping into Korsakov Music with the
8,000,000 pascal bite force of a North American grizzly, AKOV inserts
himself so hard onto the label’s roster he takes up half its name. Get
ready for ‘Rebirth’: A feisty, three track ode to mother nature’s
reload.
Some say regeneration, we say murderation: ‘Rebirth’ sets
the scene with turbine girth. Sitting somewhere between neuro, foghorns
and a Boeing 777 GE9X engine, it marks the latest chapter in Akov’s
constantly evolving sound. All thrust and gusto, it adds a whole new
harmonic light on the gutter sound du jour.
‘Rebirth’ backed by
two equally forthright, explorative designs. With its addictive, angular
riff ‘Altered Carbon’ toys with the DNB DNA. A fugly, furious fusion of
tech, dancefloor and jump-up, it’s absolute weapons grade material for
DJs on all sides of the roller paradigm and it sets us up perfectly for
‘Chub’. A chugging, militant finale, powered by soaring electro-inspired
bass textures and all manner of twisted, gnarled edits, this brings all
the boars and sows together with fitting fire.
Three tracks,
three sense-attacks: once again AKOV has taken his signature maximal
sound to brave new murky corners of drum & bass music’s darkest
nether regions. These are the bear necessities, and AKOV won’t rest at
ease until he’s bitten more off 2020 than any of us can chew.
