2015: The year Caspa delivered his boldest body of work to date. His third album, dispatched over three titanium EPs, ʻ500ʼsaw the Dub Police founder shove his flag passionately in the ground and tell the world that heʼll never jump ship from a scene heʼs helped to shape for over 12 years.
Backed with a tour of intimate venues across America, Caspaʼs mission was simple: rein the out of control genre back to its dankest, darkest, sweatiest roots and remind us why we fell in love with it in the first place. Mission successful: heʼs celebrating his proudest work with a remix package of obscene proportions with a selection of crossgenre bass masters old and new.
Scene don and Rinse FM broadcaster Youngsta takes the lead with a deep switch on ʻSubmissionʼ. A spacious subversion, the originalʼs military snares and pristine drum work has been removed for a roomier, immersive groove that envelops like an ominous low fog.
From an OG to one of the most exciting names in dubstep 2.0, Leeds-based bassmonger 50 Carrot follows with a twisted take on ʻWar Drumʼ. His ability to create both brutal, unparalleled sound design and ensure space for $pydaʼs iconic vocals is so startling he leaves legions of producers shaking in their Air Max for days on end.
Sub Slayers and Kool FM representer King Yoof switches things up again with an authentic rootsy version of ʻWar Drumʼ. Slinky, weighty, meditative and immaculately produced, King Yoofʼs 20 year service to bass can be experienced in every reverberated twist and FX throughout.
Ensuring no sonic stone is left unturned, the currently unstoppable grime EDGEM collective (comprising JT The Goon, Boylan and Dullah Beatz) twist up ʻTales Of The Unexpectedʼ. While thecurveball original saw Caspa applying the breaks, EDGEM engage with pulverising drums while retaining the edgy car-chase string-fired drama of the original.
Finally, Caspa enters the fray with a brand new original: ʻBarcode Dreamsʼ. A toxic, swaggering club cut that builds on every 16 with additional percussion, FX and bass twists. And just when you think things canʼt get darker, another twist in his precision designed plot unfolds.
As for Caspaʼs plot for 2016? Youʼll have to wait and see. But with his recent Rusko reunion enjoying serious heat on both sides of the Atlantic, we can guarantee he will continue to boldly deliver uncompromised goods. Thanks for your support.
