There can’t be many DnB emcees and vocalists who’ve written songs for Britney Spears, released tunes on Digital Soundboy, V Recordings and Technique, and toured with Wilkinson. In fact, there’s exactly one. Youngman. And now he’s back on Technique Recordings to push the art of vocal DnB a few notches further.
We’ve already heard the first part of his Spinning project, where, over a series of releases, Youngman’s song, written in collaboration with Kai Smith, is taken in three different musical directions. This time, we’ve got the Sunset Mix and, as you’d expect from that name, things are getting a little darker. The foundations are laid with some eighties horror-flick vibes in the intro as reverberating synth-drums echo around the vocal, adding weight and depth to the already-emotive song.
As the bassline and beat surge into view, accompanied by a broken-chord riff in the top end, the tune becomes all about the almost overwhelming analogue warmth. Off set with layers of percussion, the tune keeps building as new verses ride over the top. Without ever sacrificing musicality or soul, the tune builds a black-shadowed soundscape for ravers to lose themselves in.
All in all, this is a totally new take on the vocal from the producers and Technique bosses Drumsound & Bassline Smith. We’ve heard it delivered as liquid, as this darkly melodic roller, and there’s still one more twist to come. Can there be another surprise in the third and final act of the Spinning story?
Brazilian producers Alibi link up with legend of the Austrian scene Disaszt for two huge tracks on V Recordings which are guaranteed to be smashing it across the festivals this summer.
'I Got You' features the sublime vocals of Zarah, and combines huge vocal hooks, with deep, dirty basslines for the perfect vocal D&B roller. Expect this one to be played across the board, with Alibi's liquid combining effortlessly with Disaszt' neurofunk background. In contrast 'Double Trouble' is straight up dancefloor danger and picks up where Alibi's last V single 'Trunk' left off.
Alibi have been making real waves in the past 12 months, and their recent remix of Hybrid Minds 'Brighter Days' along with the last outing on V Recordings have elevated them as ones to watch in 2017! Daniel Disaszt is one of the pioneering figures of the European D&B scene, as a DJ, Promoter and Producer, and his label Mainframe has been providing big beats for 10 years and was the launch pad for many big names including Camo & Krooked and Mutated Forms amongst many others. An unexpected combination that has yielded two standout tracks, that further display the versatility of Alibi as they work towards their debut album on V Recordings.

The annual drum & bass mecca is nearly upon us. Every year, thousands of drum & bass revellers descend on Prague’s Let it Roll festival, a gathering which has expanded and become one of the genre’s largest celebrations. The global drum & bass elite meet for three days of explosive line ups. And once again the definitive imprint Ram Records is taking over with their groundbreaking roster, preparing to unleash their formidable sounds onto Let it Roll’s vast audience.
It’s not just the live aspect which makes Let it Roll such a revered part of the drum & bass world; it’s the releases which help build anticipation for the festival. This year, Ram Records delivers another four track EP to set the mood for their forthcoming takeover, featuring special guests and Ram’s renowned names for an explosive introduction to the Let it Roll experience.
Rene LaVice needs little introduction, with his offering ‘Back’ making a welcome return to the signature which has become a resounding part of the Ram back catalogue. ‘Back’ drags you into a sonic landscape which ebbs and flows between each drum break, taking you deeper and deeper with shaking percussion and a climatic second breakdown. Rene’s delivery is followed by next guest Sound in Noise, who returns to Ram for the aggressive sonic assault ‘WHAT!’. Each spike of distortion punches through to the synapses, creating a carefully manufactured yet disjointed drum & bass track which is sure to get crowds moving.
The EP provides a snapshot into what Ram has in store for Let it Roll –let them soundtrack the countdown. And with roster stalwarts Calyx & Teebee taking on the opening ceremony, this year will be the biggest yet for the label with the clock ticking for their Czech invasion.
