SIGGRAPH 2017 - Art Papers Preview

The Art Papers Program at #SIGGRAPH2017 investigate the roles of artists and the methods of art-making in an increasingly global, networked, and technologically mediated world. Art Papers contribute to our understanding of the history of art, inform contemporary artistic and critical practices, and anticipate and stimulate future trajectories.

This year, the Program explores the contributions of artists to the development of virtual and immersive experiences, bridging the digital-physical interface through engaging our embodiment within virtuality: the emergence of consumer VR and AR, how immersive experiences are shaping the cultural landscape, and their potential contributions to human creativity in art, entertainment, analytics, gaming, medicine, science, engineering, robotics, space exploration, communication, tourism, transportation, and cultural exchange. This theme is supplemented with invited talks by emerging-technologies luminaries and panels of experts from industry and the arts.

Authors present Art Papers in 20-minute sessions with five minutes of Q&A. The papers are published in a special issue of Leonardo, The Journal of the International Society of the Arts, Sciences and Technology. The issue also includes visual documentation of the works exhibited in the Art Gallery. This publication coincides with SIGGRAPH 2017 and will mark the ninth year of collaboration between SIGGRAPH and Leonardo.

New for SIGGRAPH 2017, the Best Art Paper Award recognizes excellence in contributions to the literature on digital arts, computer graphics, and/or interactive techniques.

New York State of Mind: RRDBlocks & The Cycle Squad Maniaccs

You've probably seen them, either in the streets or online, weaving in and out of moving traffic, wheels in the air, pedals spinning wildly. It might even have made you flinch while sitting comfortably at home, how close they come to getting hit by oncoming cars. That risk is the point. Getting as near to the edge as possible.

Calling Harlem's Polo Grounds projects home, RRDBlocks picked up the Ruff Ryders name from the New York motorcyclists back in the day and applied it to bicycles. Along with his team of young riders, they're the bane of the NYPD, mobbing Uptown streets, doing wall rides on buses, and manual stalls on top of cabbies. RRDBlocks and The Cycle Squad Maniaccs are a team of kids that blend off-road racing culture with BMXing.

MASS APPEAL took a trip Uptown for our new series "New York State of Mind" to rock with them as they do the thing, pointing their tires to 12 o'clock with one hand hanging lazily below, skidding sideways in front of oncoming cars, and ollying other bikes. The trip isn't without injuries though, and DBlocks himself even gets nicked by a car that he fails to weave away from in time. But he gets up with a smile and keeps it moving.

The smiles never go away.

Going the Extra Miles: A BASE Jump World Record

►CLICK for the full story on Miles' Epic feat! http://win.gs/MilesBASE

Relive Miles Daisher’s remarkable career as he attempts to reclaim the world record for most BASE jumps in 24 hours.

Around 10:35am on June 21st — the summer solstice — BASE jumper Miles Daisher’s worn, dusty sneakers left the railing of Idaho’s Perrine Bridge for the 62nd time in less than 24 hours. And by the time the parachute opened and he soared gently down to a painted bullseye along the bank of the Snake River, he recovered a world record that’d slipped away from him just last year. But at that exact moment, he’d simultaneously cemented his name atop the upper echelon of BASE jumpers, skydivers and wingsuit pilots in the world.

It was then that Daisher once again held three world records: most human-powered BASE jumps in 24 hours; the highest total BASE jumps in one year; the most BASE jumps in a lifetime.

BASE G.O.A.T. Case closed.

Kryptomedic EP (Eatbrain)

They say that words are like a virus, a code to our innermost programming, threading us together and tearing us apart with ruthless endeavor. The illustration of our world through the power of association, crossing space and time through the vibration of molecules that surround us and entering intimately through our ears, or through the valleys of our eyes - setting in motion sequences at a scale that reach far into our existence. Great armies have set upon one another, inspired to the darkness of bloodshed through the words of their leaders, rising up with power to protect those they love, or possessed and twisted by the lies of those in love with power. The media descend with ravenous hunger upon the minds of the weak, turning human beings into simple ideological vessels, machines that regurgitate the lies of the very people that feed on them. We have been sabotaged and infiltrated with a deadly code, one that turns humans into slaves, into killers, that divides and disconnects us to leave as at the mercy of bitter social surgeons and eats the very time of our existence. But we offer hope - they are the few, we are the many - the system relies on us to subjugate ourselves, to build our own chains under the pressure of cultural normality, and using the media’s scorn to discredit the very real alternatives that allow us to slip outside the system. We, the Fifth Column, flow invisible through this network, erasing the language malware that has infected untold numbers. Language from the heart connects us, words can free and inspire us, and the weight of the bass reminds us of our power. It’s time to eradicate and liberate.
MC KRYPTOMEDIC unleashes a sequence of tightly wound compositions led squarely by his distinctive vocals and cutting lyrical style. His veteran ear and on point curation sees 4 contemporary producers either building to the top of their game, or sitting at the apex already, implementing an array of intricate audio artifacts, with AKOV, DISPHONIA, FRAGZ and STATE OF MIND bringing their most effective sonic weaponry to the table. The entirely charismatic Kryptomedic is deeply familiar to fans of the perpetually rising EATBRAIN label, having led the ceremonies of countless Eatbrain events from clubs to festivals across Europe. With the KRYPTOMEDIC EP, Eatbrain welcomes one of their true brothers home and provides the perfect platform for one of d&b’s leading MCs to deliver his striking message.
